Celebrating the 10th BPI Commencement

January 26, 2013

On January 26, the Bard Prison Initiative held its tenth and largest-ever commencement ceremony at Eastern Correctional Facility.

Sixty incarcerated students received associate or bachelor’s degrees. The Reverend Calvin Butts delivered the address and President Leon Botstein presided. Below is a video postcard from that morning at Eastern – please enjoy and share:

Senior Projects by the bachelor degree graduates included investigations of topics ranging from “Exploring Fractal Dimension Calculations for Chaotic Systems” to “Ludwig Erhard and the Limits of Economic Liberalism in West Germany from 1948 to 1963.” Associate degree graduates included women and men who began their studies with Bard in prisons all across New York State.

From all of us at BPI: thank you for your help in making that day possible.

Every autumn, Leon Botstein conducts the Bard College Conservatory Orchestra within Eastern Correctional Facility. The annual program draws an audience of roughly 500 from within the prison and is a rare opportunity for Conservatory students to share their talents with their fellow Bard students who are enrolled through BPI, as well as the general population at Eastern.
